Zacchaeus Lock, winner of the 2017 AGO Pittsburgh Chapter Quimby Regional Competition for Young Organists, is music director at Our Lady of Refuge Church in the Bronx and de facto music director for the Una Voce community at Immaculate Conception Church in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Since receiving his B.A. in Sacred Music and in Philosophy at Franciscan University of Steubenville under Nicholas Will, his career has taken him to work as music director, choir director, singer, and organist at churches across the country.
Whether it is for liturgies, paraliturgies, services, disservices, performances, or competitions, Zacchaeus’s organ playing is characterized by unique technique and registrations, zeal for repertoire off the beaten path, and creativity and improvisation; his solo performance tour in Summer 2018 was well-received by hundreds. As an alumnus of the St. Mary’s Student Schola (directed by David Hughes and Charles Weaver) Zacchaeus sang for tens of thousands at World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid as well as at events in New York City, Boston, and elsewhere; his experience working with professional choral ensembles under such diverse directorship as Scott Turkington, Chris Mueller, Alan Lewis, Jennifer Donelson-Nowicka, and Wilko Brouwers influences the hands-on conducting work he does today at the two parishes he serves and for all sorts of impromptu liturgies in the New York tri-state. Today, Zacchaeus lives in Bethel, Connecticut, near to his parents and seven younger siblings, near to his Brazilian jiu-jitsu gym, and near to the Danbury airport where he is a student pilot; there he procrastinates on composing his Mass for unison voices and organ.
